Local History

Most of the houses in the DRARA area were built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. There are some notable exceptions, for example in the area around the Bartlemas Chapel. Extracts from Annie Skinner’s excellent book, Cowley Road, provide useful background information to the development of the area and are reproduced by kind permission of the author. Click on “Divinity Road Area History” on the menu on the left hand side to read more.

Are you interested in finding out who was living in your house at the time of the 1901 census? Click on “1901 census” on the left hand side to find out.

Excellent photographs of the DRARA area are available on the Oxfordshire County Council website. Use their Heritage Search facility to find pictures of your street.

The local history pages of the website have been compiled by Elizabeth Mills on behalf of DRARA. She would welcome additions, comments and photographs. Use the Get in Touch button on the menu at the top of the page to send her a message.
