Manzil Way Mosque and the Call to Prayer
January 16, 2008
Several members have asked for DRARA’s views on the recent reports in the local and national media about the proposal to broadcast the call to prayer from the minaret of the Manzil Way mosque.
At present, DRARA has not formulated an official position on the matter because a planning application has not yet been submitted to Oxford City Council.
The original planning permission (reference 96/00804/NFY) for the Mosque, granted in 1996, specifically excluded the erection and installation of an external lighting system or sound system without further planning permission.
It also obliged the Mosque committee to landscape the site, and plant trees along the boundaries with Divinity Road and Manzil Way.
A full copy of this grant of permission can be accessed online via the Oxford City Council website – follow link Mosque Planning Permission and click on “Associated Documents” tab.
The matter is being monitored by committee members Peter Coggins (Chair) and Elizabeth Mills. Residents wishing to be kept up to date, or express a view to the committee are invited to do so via the Get in Touch button.
